Pepper Tree Calcare Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
This single-vineyard reserve-grade Coonawarra cabernet has impressive, smooth mulberry and black fruit aromas, a hint of leaf and gentle mint, some fresh, cedary oak in the mix adding spice too. The palate s really supple and even, showing a bright and lively thread of tannin that focuses, spine-like, down the middle. The flavours run through black fruits to plums and there s a wave of toasty oak and mocha through the finish. Well styled.

From the best rows in Pepper Tree's small Coonawarra vineyard, the name coming from the limestone (calcare) soil of Coonawarra. Strong purple-red, it has abundant cassis and blackcurrant fruit, a touch of Coonawarra earth that will grow with time, and fine oak.

Strong colour; a distinguished cabernet by any standards, the bouquet with high-toned cassis and blackcurrant aromas, the medium- to full-bodied palate with similar fruit characters framed by exemplary tannins and high-quality French oak. Gold medal Sydney Wine Show '10.

There's plenty of flavour and power packed into this Coonawarra Cabernet, but it handles it with control and restraint. The themes are mint, plump blueberries and blackcurrants and spice with black plum skin notes. Its juicy mid palate is well textured with fine-grained tannins and integrated oak.

Peppermint city. But not in a bad way - it gives the wine beautiful perfume. Plus, it comes attached to rich flavours of pure blackcurrant and dark olives. Everything about this wine seems manicured and carefully placed. Fine elegant tannin marks the exit. Lots of juicy, succulent length. This is a stand-out wine, and a great addition to the Coonawarra landscape.

Good colour; cassis, cedar and a touch of mint, shows a classic Coonawarra personality; quite dark and dense, with generous texture, and fresh acidity to draw out the finish.
