Peter Lehmann Mentor Cabernet Shiraz Malbec

Cracka Review

The 2009 Mentor is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Shiraz and 10% Malbec. It is a limited release showing great depth of colour, rich flavours of blackcurrant and dark chocolate and a firm fine grained tannin finish—a wine of great concentration and style which can be cellared with confidence.

Mentor is an ideal accompaniment to duck, goose and game dishes. It is superb with oxtail, braised lamb shanks and wonderful with a fine aged cheddar.

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2009 Vintage) says
An exactingly crafted blend that exemplifies the savoury definition and longevity of the understated 2009 vintage, yet with the well-poised and intricately polished fruit profile that defines the modern Peter Lehmann style. Considerable fruit concentration and definition are on show here, capturing the vibrancy of crunchy redcurrant and leaf of cabernet (70% of the blend), the spice and black plums of shiraz (20%) and the earthy undertone of firmly structured malbec. A lingering aftertaste and finely textured tannin chassis promise longevity.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
The blend finishes its fermentation in French oak hogsheads and spends the next 18 months in those barrels. It has very good colour, and has a generous palate of black and red fruits, earth, black olive and cedary oak. A medium- to full-bodied wine with a long future.

Powerfully flavoured, but elegant and finely balanced, with a lightly smoky, cedary fragrance of cassis, dark plums and dark chocolate oak lifted by a whiff of violets and dried herbs. Generous and juicy, its sweet, deeply ripened flavours of cassis, mulberries, dark plums and red berries knit with fresh oak and gentle, but firmish tannins. It might just push the border into overripeness, but has genuine depth and richness.

Bright medium red-purple; a brand that has reinvented itself over its lifetime, originally matured in American oak, then a mix of French and American, the primary fermentation finished in that oak followed by 18 months' maturation. It is a Cabernet with real authority to its fruit, suggesting some comes from old vines in the Eden Valley as well as the Barossa Valley; it has length aplenty, and good balance.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Has retained good hue and depth; skilled winemaking, the primary ferment finished in barrel, then maturation for 18 months in French oak hogsheads has resulted in a fine, cedary bouquet, the palate with elegant blackcurrant fruit, cedar nuances, and a very long finish amplified by precisely the amount of savoury tannins cabernet should have. Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Rich, complete and beautifully structured for the longer term, it's scented with faintly herbal, cedary aromas of blackberries, cassis, dark plums and dark chocolates, with undertones of leather, baked earth and a hint of menthol. It's full-bodied but elegant, with a long, dark and brambly palate of small dark berry/plum fruit and cedar/chocolate oak underpinned by pliant but firm, powdery tannins. It finishes with lingering notes of blackberry and plum kernel.

Intense wines with intense flavours but highly drinkable, red-berry fruit turning liquorice, very rich, complex berry fruit with firm tannins that will take plenty of time to grow.

Very good hue; classic cabernet on both bouquet and palate, oak seamlessly integrated by finishing fermentation in French hogsheads, the Cork a tribute to the flat-earth American market; very good structure and great length.

A slow-maturing, long term cabernet that will take years to unravel its layers of deep, dark fruits, polished cedar/vanilla oak and firm, tightly-knit tannin. A floral perfume of raspberries, cassis, plums and fresh bubblegum-like oak precedes a long, tightly knit and finely measured palate saturated with vibrant and persistent flavour.

The colour is still diffuse, possibly shaken by transport shortly prior to tasting; the cool vintage accentuates the Bordeaux make-up; this is a wine to challenge rather than soothe you, but is certainly as varietallycorrect as possible.

An elegant, smooth and silky cabernet blend whose dusty, floral perfume of violets, cassis, cedar and vanilla oak reveals undertones of dried herbs, mint and menthol. Full to medium weight, It's long and vibrant, with intense flavours of mulberries, plums and blackberries backed by creamy oak and framed by powdery, bony tannins. It finishes with lingering minty dark fruits and nuances of menthol.
