Picardy Pemberton Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

I have a prediction for this year – it will be the year that cool climate Shiraz becomes seriously cool with many people deciding to leave the big, bold wines behind. And if they pick up this wine from Picardy, there is no way they will be disappointed. Clove, pepper, leathery and blackberry fruit, on a mid-weight wine finishing fresh and lively. Very tasty indeed.

Winemaker's Notes

The first Picardy Shiraz was produced in 1997. An elegant, complex, rich, Rhone style wine, this variety is exceeding expectations and will continue to improve through cellaring.

Dan says that this wine is made a lot like a traditional Burgundy but using Shiraz grapes, giving a wine in the style of the traditional Rhone reds.

Its points of excellence include: excellent colour, pronounced fruit flavour, low pH without high acidity and fine grained tannins. This is a complex wine.

Picardy Pemberton Shiraz

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
A complex and meaty shiraz from Pemberton that shows plenty of spice, charcuterie, ripe plums and cassis; there's a background sanguine character here too. The palate's mapped out with fine texture and juicy acidity, holding elegant flavours of plum and blueberry nicely in check. Some light herbs and smooth tannins to close.

There's no blurb or bull on the back of Picardy labels. Just a barcode. If you haven't got anything to say, don't say it. Challenging wine but a really good one. Peppery, plummy, stalky, smoky, meaty and reduced (it could do with some oxygen). A wild wine! Has good fruit, is supple, balanced, and well weighted. Very savoury. Good length. As with so many of the Picardy wines, it has personality. Tops.

The kind of wine that encourages you to drink more red wine - not that we need any encouragement! Peppery, red-and blackberried, fresh, meaty and stylish. In the mouth the balance is the thing - no alcohol heat, purity, fine tannins and a long finish. It's complete, and it's very good.

Stylish Shiraz of poise and elegance. Silky smooth palate with fine ripe tannins, fine grained oak and excellent fruit all held nice together. The palate has a spicy character, which is sustained. Lingers in the mouth. Still needs a little time to really come together.

An aromatic bouquet of fresh red fruits flows into a palate where red and black cherry plus spice lead the band; silky mouthfeel with very good oak and tannin balance.

Medium red-purple; lifted berry, leaf, spice and earth proclaims its cool climate origins; similar flavours run through the light to medium-bodied palate, which has good length and balance.

Vivid purple-red; a rich, deep and complex bouquet with black fruits and spice; the palate provides more of the same dark fruits, supported by fine, savoury tannins which run through the length of the palate; good oak handling.

Medium to fall red-purple; the bouquet is complex, with some gamey varietal characters similar to those found in the northern Rhone Valley. The palate has good depth and concentration, with ripe black cherry fruit, soft, lingering tannins and very subtle oak.
