This junior Pirie chardonnay is steely and restrained and has almost chablis-like austerity - all about cool-climate fruit. Cool melon and pears, some honeysuckle and floral edges, finishing with a racy, bracing crispness.

This approachable junior wine has some nicely dealt complexity and creamy/yeasty notes, ripe bananas and restrained nashi pear aromas. Baked pear flavours run on steely mineral lines through the palate, gently creamed lees influence through the finish. Nicely pitched and balanced.

Pale, bright straw-green; a complex wine with strong winemaker thumbprints shaping the texture and flavours that embroider, rather than obscure, the core of stone fruit flavours, adding creamy/nutty nuances.

Overall, an exercise in restraint; melon and nectarine fruit, some traces of cashew from partial mlf.

I've lost track of Andrew Pirie. Every time I open a press release, he's moved. He used to be 'Mr Tasmania', the man behind Piper's Brook, then he popped up in Coonawarra before going back to Tassie and releasing these wines under his own name. Now he's the boss at Tamar Ridge. So I don't know if he made this or not, and I don't really care. It's terrific, fine and brilliantly seafood-friendly chardy. If you see Andrew, tell him to call.
