Pirie Sparkling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The Pirie label is now owned by the Brown family (yes, of Brown Brothers fame), who are some of the cleverest sparkling winemakers in the country. Tasmania's winemaking hero Andrew Pirie is still in charge though, so little surprise then that this is quality sparkling. What we like here is that subtle undertone of fruit, combined with the complexity of intelligent winemaking. High class Aussie fizz.

Winemaker's Notes

This sparkling wine is a pale straw/gold colour with a fine and persistent bead. Bready and biscuity autolysis notes from lees ageing are balanced by crisp apples and citrus lift. Vibrant lemony acidity adds drive to a full and rich mid-palate, vigorous mousse and a slaty, mineral persisting finish. Drinking well now it will continue to improve over the next 4 years.

The Pirie NV is a consistent blend that gives its drinkers the chance to drink on its own or with food. It works very well with the classic oysters. It also has enough weight and complexity to match up to richer fish like baked ocean trout and yellow fin tuna.

Pirie Sparkling

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock says
Gentle, yeasty complexity and a little reduction too, some fresh nuts and fine lemon citrus, gentle spiced notes and little white flowers. Builds spice and richer, yeasty autolysis flavour on the palate; really fine and crisp, neatly balanced, clean and even. Nice, tight, finely focused style.
The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010
James Halliday says
Pale colour; focused and fresh lemon fruit and spring blossom bouquet; generous and creamy mouthfeel, with linear acidity and well-handled dosage; very good focus.
Australian Wine Companion 2010
Tyson Stelzer says
Pirie is under the ownership of sparkling legends Brown Brothers, but Andrew Pirie remains in control. An ideal winter NV, thanks to powerful fruit and complexity of honey, lemon tea, nutmeg and melons.
WINE 100 Magazine - 2011
Fresh aromas of citrus and green apples. Refreshingly crisp palate with nice combination of youthfulness, complexity and aged characters.
