Portal del Priorat Gotes Montsant Carignan Grenache
Hailing from Monsant in Northern Spain, this is quite an elegant red blend from Portal del Priorat, but it certainly packs a punch in the fruit department. It's only around 13.5% alcohol, and shows an abundance of cherry smells and flavours, along with hits of pepper, licorice and chocolate. The palate is more medium-bodied and juicy, with more choc-coated cherries, a fine line of tannins, and a smooth, succulent, spice and savoury finish. Should cellar well over the next 3 to 5-years.
In 2013 a new wine was added to the Gotes brand, this time from vineyards in Monsant with chalky, clay soils. Vines aged more than 40 years on high slopes facing east and southeast at an altitude of 300-700 metres. 2011 had a soft Spring with little rain. Grapes were manually picked, aged for 6 months in French oak. Slightly more masculine style of the Gotes with a deeper purple hue, and tones of deeper fruits. Tighter tannins give the impression of a taut wine, with grip on the palate, but still very smooth and delicate.
