Cracka Review

Central Otago is one of the most exciting yet unlikely regions in the Southern Hemisphere, the rugged untamed wilderness is turning out some dramatic and impressive wines. This winery is named after the rock deposits that are located under the vineyards that impart some legendary characters to the wines. Pinot Gris is the great white hope for New Zealand and this one is quite European in style. Think fatter, fuller, longer and stronger and you’ll understand just how textured and laden with rich fruit and minerals this wine is. If you thought you knew what Gris was all about, think again.

Quartz Reef Pinot Gris

Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
Rudi Bauer's 2010 pinot gris is a complex one, with a layer of honeysuckle, baking spices and creamy nougat sitting alongside ripe pear, orange and yellow peach. The palate swirls up into creamy textural shape; quite impressive weight and body here, with pears and white-peach fruits folding through almonds and gentle baking spices.

Pretty florals, spicy pink pear skins, grapefruit & lychee. Vivacious aromatics with pristine fruit & real presence on the palate. Superb balance with underlying quartzy minerality & lots of texture from extended lees contact. Gorgeous alone, an exceptionally good food wine.

A message to you, Rudi - keep up the good work! Handy winemaking has elevated this gris to complex and stylish territory; it shows spiced apples, ripe pears and hints of citrus fruit too. The palate's rich, juicy and gently spicy to boot -great length balance and power Superb!

From one of the great characters of the Central Otago region, Rudi Bauer, this has a stylish, complex nose of ripe, spiced pear and peach fruits. The palate has really deep-reaching flavour, more into the mango and guava fruit spectrum, and chewy, fleshy texture. Food is advisable, as this has plenty to offer.

Rudi Bauer has a strong handle on getting the best from his Central Otago grapes. His pinot gris is right in the zone of honey and baked pears, some pastry too. The palate is rich and soft, loaded with pear and apple flavour, finishing with a leesy drizzle of honey, balanced fine acid finish.

Light to medium yellow-green; the bouquet is quite complex, with lemon, lemon blossom and lemon peel aromas. A tight, lively, crisp and long palate is enhanced by the flavours which run right through its length. The only gold medal winner in the dry 1999 Pinot Gris class at the Royal Easter Wine Show 2000.
