Redgate OFS Semillon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

What does OFS stand for? Is it code for ‘Open, fill, and Sink?’ Well no, but you may want to sink a glass when you try the quality. It’s actually an acronym for ‘Our Finest Selection,’ and it captures the best fruit available to Redgate winery when assembling this wine. A wine that is lifted with citrus, gooseberry and subtle buttery characters as well as sherberty acids that linger on the finish.

Redgate OFS Semillon

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2012 Vintage) says
A simple, elemental and youthful semillon that should age slowly. Its dusty, faintly herbal and nettle-like bouquet of honeydew melon, green apple skin and lime juice precedes a long, succulent palate with rather a viscous, round presence ofmelon and lemony fruit that moves slowly towards its finish of fresh, tangy acids.

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Dusty, nettle-like aromas of melon, lemon and a whiff of tobacco leaf precede a vibrant, long and juicy palate whose mouthfilling flavours of melon and gooseberry are wrapped in gentle, mineral acids and backed by creamy, nutty, leesy complexity. Charmingly weighted and balanced, with delicious varietal qualities.

A very good example of Margaret River semillon, combining freshness and crispness with a range of flavours running from zesty lemon to herb and mineral; crisp, crunchy acidity lengthens the finish.

A pronounced green nettle bouquet follows onto the palate, with some generosity, although a little too green.

Has soared above the limitations of the vintage; a bright, crisp and clear delineation of semillon, offering herb, grass and touches of passionfruit and citrus; very good finish.

Clean, fragrant and fresh; lots of citrus and gooseberry flavours almost into Sauvignon Blanc; admirable restraint in not seeking to guild the lily.

Jeremy Oliver (2003 Vintage) says
Dusty herbal aromas of great beans and asparagus with nuances of honeydew, melon and lightly toasty vanilla oak. Rather exaggerated the viscous, slightly oily palate, presents genuine depth of passionfruit like varietal flavours and profoundly herbaceous influences, finishing with a touch of sweetness.

Herb and wild flower aromas; smooth palate, crisp finish.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Light straw-green, with lots of CO, evident; the fresh, crisp bouquet bas subtle spice and herb aromas in inimitable Margaret River style; the medium-bodied palate has plenty of mid-palate flavour, but the alcohol does show on the finish.

Look, everytime I taste one of these stunning semillons I just get peeved that more people donÕt drink them. This is one of the best from Redgate. The OFS stands for "our finest selection" and I reckon it is. Citrus and light grassy gooseberry characters delivered with restraint. It's delicate but with a lingering building intensity. Superb semillon style.
