This Hawke's Bay red is made for early drinking. A 2:1 blend, grown at Maraekakaho and matured for a year in French and American oak casks, the 2002 is the first vintage to exclude Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a skilfully crafted wine, fragrant, with very good depth of ripe-berry and plum flavours, a sweet, coconutty oak influence and strong drink-young appeal.

Grown at Maraekakaho in Hawke's Bay, the 2000 vintage is deeply coloured, rich and smooth, with plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours, the slight herbal influence of Cabernet Sauvignon, and finely integrated oak. It's a forward, mouthfilling wine with gentle tannins. Due to frost, there is no 2001.

Grown at Maraekakaho in Hawke's Bay, the 1997 vintage is a blend of Merlot (63 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (32 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (5 per cent), matured for a year in an even split of French and American oak casks (50 per cent new). Designed as an "easy-drinking" style, it's a fragrant, concentrated wine with full, bright colour, excellent depth of warm, ripe, plum/red berry flavour, fleshed out with quality oak, and soft tannins. Clearly from a great year, the 1998 (tasted prior to bottling) is a powerful and densely coloured red with a strong surge of cassis/spice flavours, chewy, ripe tannins and impressive concentration. It's a well-structured wine, for drinking 2000 onwards.
