Richmond Grove Limited Release Watervale Riesling

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Now, this is what Richmond Grove is all about - riesling! This one shows typical bright limy aromas, along with honeysuckle florals and a touch of ginger spice. The palate is light-bodied, zippy and zesty, with bright citrus and white stone fruit flavours, frisky acidity, and a dry, crisp finish. This is one to drink over the next 5-years with some sushi.

Winemaker's Notes

Vibrant, pale green. Intense aromas of floral lemon and lime fruit character with a backdrop of appealing white floral spice.

The palate displays attractive regional tropical lime and stone fruit flavours, which are supported with a backbone of a lively but soft natural acidity which ensures the wine, will drink well in the short to medium term.

A generously flavoured wine which displays attractive varietal and regional characteristics. The Richmond Grove Ltd Release Watervale Riesling has the potential to develop the classic honeyed Riesling flavours with careful cellaring under the screw cap closure.

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Stylish and finely crafted, with an assertive, punchy bouquet of lavender and white flowers, lemon and lime backed by nuances of stonefruit and minerals. It's round and juicy, with a generous presence of intense varietal flavour underpinned by a chalky texture, finishing with length, freshness and focused restraint. Another fine release from this reliable label

A restrained example of Watervale flavour and style. Excellent floral delicacy and lovely line of upfront acidity and persistent citrus flavoured finish. Lovely for first two years or wait three more.

Feminine and charming, with a delicate, complex perfume of white flowers, lime juice and apple. It's pristine and beautifully focused, with a bright, concentrated presence of tangy, essence-like riesling flavour extending long down the palate and underpinned by a fine chalkiness. It finishes long and clean, with a bright, racy acidity and a mineral suggestion of bath powder

Nick Stock (2008 Vintage) says
A wine that does well in all seasons, and riesling legend John Vickery's touch is all over this vintage. Very fresh lemon and lime aromas, really clean and bright, quite settled. Smooth palate shape with bright lime juice flavour and a gentle acid tang. Not super-concentrated, but nicely balanced all the same.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
A relatively quiet opening on the bouquet and fore-palate, but takes off on the brilliant and vibrant finish; full of zesty, tangy fruit entwined with acidity.

A quintessential floral bouquet; beautifully balanced flavours on the palate, primarily sweet lime with a touch of passionfruit; excellent length.

Ken Gargett (2006 Vintage) says
Once in a generation, a winemaker is considered so good at their craft that they become like vinous royalty. Jeffrey Grosset is the current monarch of the riesling art, but a generation ago it was John Vickery. What we seem to have forgotten is that Vickery is still with us, still making brilliant (and often heavily discounted) riesling for Richmond Grove. Talk about under the radar—like finding Picasso still carving cubes at the local market.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Flavoured with lemon rind, lime juice and candy, this finely crafted austere and tightly focused riesling is long, powdery and austere, finishing with pleasing tightness and a lingering briney aspect.

A clean bouquet leads into a firm, reserved wine with tight but good structure; will develop slowly but absolute certainty on the basis of its classic mineral and citrus foundation; 4 gold medals.

James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Bright, light colour; fresh and crisp; still a baby on its way to growing up; delicacy and finesse. Should develop as well as the now beautiful '98 and '99 wines under screwcap.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Light green-yellow; a classic bouquet of mineral, slate, apple and citrus, then smooth mid-palate fruit and a touch of CO2 on the lingering finish. Has plenty of power.

James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
The spotlessly clean bouquet offers splashes of citrus, herb, mineral, ripe apple and passionfruit; the perfectly balanced palate is less exuberant flavourwise but is intense and powerful.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Light to medium yellow-green; a clean and crisp bouquet with mineral and lime aromas moving into lime, mineral and toast on a palate with great length and grip. A classic in the making which is quite certain to achieve significantly higher points when mature.

James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Light to medium yellow-green; a spotlessly clean and powerful bouquet with predominantly citrus/lime fruit, and just a hint of tropical sweetness. The palate unfolds progressively, with a steely core around which pristine varietal fruit flavours are folded. Has all the indications of becoming a great classic.
