Robert Oatley Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The Oatley’s seem to make a habit of doing well in everything they turn their attention to, from winning the Sydney to Hobart on numerous occasions to making premium reds from their beloved Mudgee. This is actually Shiraz from two ends of the country, the Frankland River and Mudgee, so you get hearty generosity from the NSW component and structured elegance from the WA version. You’ll find blueberry and spice characters as well as rich chocolate and soft tannins.

Winemaker's Notes

This delicious, ground-breaking blended wine from viticultural regions on opposite sides of the country owes its silky texture to Mudgee and ethereal shiraz aromas to Frankland River. Elegant and stylish, it drinks well throughout all seasons.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Deep purple-crimson; both the bouquet and palate have a clarion call of regional character, black fruits, bitter chocolate and spice in a medium- to full-bodied framework; French oak has contributed, but it is the quality of the grapes, and the controlled alcohol, that make the wine what it is.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Good colour; a lifted bouquet of plum, blackberry and a hint of apricot; the palate is sweet and supple and has a dark element of tar to complement the chewy finish

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
How important to you is the soft, sweet impact of a wine? If your answer is 'Very', then here's a wine for you - it's about as satiny as they come. It has more to recommend it too: flavours of Asian spice, mulberries and dark and red cherries. It has chubby oak, but this is already showing signs that it's settling into the wine. It's a lovely, quality wine.
