Saltram Winemaker's Selection Shiraz Tempranillo

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Shiraz and tempranillo make a pretty good pair, and this one from the Barossa Valley is certainly at the richer end of the spectrum. Aromas of dark plums, exotic spices, mocha and slight florals decorate the nose, whilst the palate is full-bodied and fleshy, with a sweet ball of dark fruits at its centre, a solid line of tannins, and a tight, taut, sweetly fruited finish with a kick of dark chocolate in the tail. It begs for time, but a good decant should sort it out.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Vibrant and reminiscent of just-crushed blackberries.

Nose: The nose is fragrant with aromas reminiscent of juniper and blueberries, violets and freshly crushed bay leaves. Hints of savoury spice and a flinty mineral lift are also evident.

Palate: The spice and mineral notes are also evident on the palate. 'Granite' tannins contribute to the fine, linear structure while the flavours of redcurrants, citrus rind and cranberries give the wine a lingering vibrancy. The restrained use of oak enabled the tannins to mature bringing subtlety to the wine while gently adding aromatic complexity.

WINESTATE (2008 Vintage) says
Dense, inky colour with youthful licorice and blackcurrant bouquet and a very good core of intense, youthful varietal fruit nicely layered with lovely velvety tannins. Drinking well now.
