Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Sandalford own one of the oldest Vineyard plots in the Margaret River, planted in 1970 and this is where all the fruit for the premium range is drawn from. Still regarded as one of the best vintages in the region on record so expect to be blown away by the quality. This Shiraz is unmistakably varietal with seductive black fruit on the nose before a sweet, jubey fruit palate and some spicy, herbal tones. The oak is subtle, the finish long with loads of generous tannins. It will cellar well for the next decade but will pair well with steak, lamb or even venison.

Winemaker's Notes

WINEMAKERS NOTES:

Hand-picked in early April 2014, the Shiraz grapes were de-stemmed and crushed before being inoculated with selected yeast strains and fermented in small 10 tonne static fermenters. The must was mixed, by pumping over, twice daily during fermentation to keep the skins and juice in constant contact. Based on taste, the fermenting must was pressed once the perfect balance of colour, flavour and tannin extraction was reached. After the completion of primary fermentation, the wine was inoculated for Malolactic Fermentation (MLF), before being transferred to 100% French oak, of which 25% were new barrels. The wine then spent 12 months maturing in the barriques prior to blending and bottling.

TASTING NOTES:

COLOUR: Dark cherry red, with magenta hues
NOSE: Sweet mulberries up front, balanced with savoury spices - nutmeg and star anise, and a hint of vanilla.
PALATE: Just like the nose...lots of sweet berries, particularly mulberries, blueberries and blackberries up front, with the same spices providing a savoury balance. Velvety soft tannins from the seamless integration of French oak combine with the acid to give a beautiful structure and lead to a gentle lingering finish. A wine that will age gracefully for at least another ten years from the vintage date.

Alc/Vol: 14.8%

Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
Deep crimson; the bouquet offers a healthy dose of fine oak spices, red fruits, lavender and licorice; the palate is medium-to full-bodied with ample fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity providing line and length; the oak is dominant at this early stage, but time should see integration.

This wine finished its fermentation in new and 1-year-old French oak barriques, a technique that gives rise to the supple tannins and superior oak integration on the medium-bodied palate; spices of all kinds are evident on the bouquet, but are only a seasoning for its black cherry and plum fruit.

Medium red-purple; not bottled until Jan '11, tasted 6 weeks later, well prior to release; an elegant, medium-bodied wine that shines with its considerable length and silky mouthfeel. Hand-picked, dry-grown, decades-old estate vines were the crucible in which the wine was formed, and underwrite its 20-year future.

Deep purple-crimson; the key to understanding this wine is that it finished its primary fermentation (and mlf) in new and 1-year-old fine-grained French oak, neatly side-stepping the need for open fermentation; has delicious spice and pepper nuances to its red and black cherry fruit, the tannins fine and long.

This ripe opulent vintage was ideal for Shiraz, This one is loaded to the gunwales with stacks of spicy plummy fruit. Lots of mulberry and red berry influences with some lifted scented cedar added in there. Smooth and seamless palate which has plenty of tannin support.

It used to be said that Margaret River wasn't any good for shiraz, but the past few years have put paid to that. It seems the region's best shiraz producers have worked out how to grow it in the maritime climate. Impossible not to enjoy this. It's soft, generous, mouth-filling and delicious - all the big guns of red-wine enjoyment. It tastes of sundry summer berries and cedary, coffeed oak, though in truth it all comes across as soft and seamless. Mighty fine wine.
