Saracen Estates Margaret River Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Saracen has nothing to do with Medieval Arabian desert dwellers. It actually relates to the Saraceni Family who own the winery. They make some cracking wine out of the Margaret River, and this little shiraz is a belter! Lots of black cherries, mint and anise decorate the nose and tantalise the senses. Whilst on the palate, its graceful and giving with spiced plummy fruit, earthiness and a lick of cedar before a balanced, tight, mellow finish. A perfect match to lamb stew and dumplings.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep violet in colour. The nose displays notes of menthol, aniseed and dark cherry. Silky mouth feel shows off this earthy numbers stewed plum and cherry component. The wine is delicate with a generous palate and displays amazing control bypassing a lot of astringency associated with this varietal. It tapers off neatly with an elegant finish of cinnamon dusted cigar box oak. The tannins are toned down quite dramatically which maximizes its drinkability. Perfect with red meat dishes or on its own, a true all rounder that we are very proud of. Enjoy now to 2021.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Good purple-crimson; the attractive, berry-field bouquet introduces a juicy wine, with supple red and black fruits supported by silky tannins and evident oak on the medium-bodied palate and the long, harmonious finish.

A classic rhone style red fruit and spice spectrum wine. Achieves remarkable depth and intensity of black cherry blackberry fruit with integration and generosity of flavour in the ripe years and red berry black pepper spice aromas in the cool years. Throws, restraint to the wind in the ripe years achieving generous jammy fleshy fabulousness in the mouth. Tasted twice

A cool climate style with intense purple hues. A lovely balance and length of tightly wound, raspberry-like varietal fruit, fine grained oak and pleasant peppery notes.

Bright purple-crimson; has a fragrant spicy/ savoury bouquet, then a very fine and elegant palate with red berry fruits, gossamer tannins and well-balanced and integrated oak. Gold medal Qantas Wine Show of WA '10.

Ray Jordan (2009 Vintage) says
A firmer and more sinewy style of shiraz than say at Frankland. yet there is plenty of plump flesh wrapped up by the grain tannins and fine grained oak. It's generous and richly textured with a savoury dark fruit mix right on the money. Slightly astringent finish but very good.

I love this style of shiraz. It's sort of grainy and sinewy yet with the typical fleshy opulence of the variety. Heaps of warm ripe plummy fruit supported with fine grained cedary oak. Touches of chocolate and spicy savoury plum pudding add to a compelling palate. Good structure and finesse.

Elegant, perfectly balanced and proportioned; blackcurrant and complex spicy notes, some sweet, some savoury, some simply peppery; fine, lingering tannins.

Medium-weight Shiraz with a blend of savoury, slightly spicy, ripe plum flavours, merged neatly with lightly-weighted oak. Fine tannins and a seamless controlled palate.
