SC Pannell Grenache Shiraz Touriga

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This silky smooth blend from winemaking whizz, Steve Pannell, is sure to be a hit at your next dinner party. Bright red fruits, and a medium body from the Grenache and Shiraz and some lovely dusty grippy tannins from the Portuguese varietal, Touriga.

Winemaker's Notes

McLaren Vale has an amazingly textured landscape and this blend may just represent a changing of the guard away from the traditional single varietals, to wines that reflect the diversity of the region. Their climatic suitability generally means fewer inputs in the vineyard and winery, increasing sustainability, improving the environment and resulting in wines with amazing depth, complexity and flavour. Grenache brings lifted aromatics and its trademark sandy tannins, Shiraz chimes in with red fruits, spice and weight, whilst the Touriga, a lusty, powerful Portuguese variety, adds pungent fruit characteristics of plum pudding, dried spices and floral notes. The resultant wine is so much more than just the sum of it’s three parts, and is utterly drinkable and down right irresistible. VINTAGE From November 2012 to March 2013 the weather was a very dry and warm in McLaren Vale ideal for these varieties. However the preceding winter in McLaren Vale was one of its wettest, providing good vineyard vigour during the growing season, good yields and intense flavours. WINEMAKING Variety: Grenache 69% Shiraz 18% Touriga 8% Mataro 5% Region: McLaren Vale Alcohol: 14% Fermentation: The fruit was hand-harvested, crushed and traditionally vinified in small open top fermenters to optimise flavour extraction during fermentation. Temperatures remained between a minimum of 15°C and a maximum of 35°. Fermentation was over 14 days, during which time the cap was hand plunged and pumped over. Maturation Malolactic fermentation in stainless, then transferred to old 500L French puncheons for 8 months. FOR THE SENSES Flavour Profile: This youthful, vibrant and fruit driven style presents lifted fruits of cherry and cranberry, interwoven with lovely dried spice, cumin, lavender and graphite complexity. Structure and Texture: Silky and slippery. It’s a flavoursome, medium-bodied wine. The palate is long and consistent with integrated tannins that provide for a balanced finish, and a synergy with food. CELLARING Best enjoyed over the next five years whilst it’s fresh and alive. However, the old vine Grenache will age gracefully, and present some great secondary characters if they’re your thing. SERVING Being a young juicy medium bodied wine it would be ideal for a wide range of dishes. It’s our all rounder, anywhere, anytime with anything red.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2013 Vintage) says
A 69/18/8% blend plus 5% mataro; 10 months in used French puncheons. Bright, clear crimson; the floral red fruits of grenache lead the way on the bouquet and light to medium-bodied palate alike; just when you think the silky smooth palate is going to cruise serenely through to the finish, the flavour and texture introduce a pleasantly grippy note to lift the whole wine.
