Scarpantoni Pedler Creek Cabernet

Cracka Review

An intense bouquet of blackberry and cassis with overtones of chocolate and spice. The palate is richly layered with dark berry and spice complemented by hints of varietal herbaciousness. This well balanced wine has firm oak tannins leading to a long finish.

Just what you expect and want from McLaren Vale cabernet: supple, rich blackcurrant and dark plum flavours with vanilla-bean oak. Easy to like.

Scarpantoni holds its Pedler Creek back from release for a couple of years, and it always seems to benefit the wines. They generally have a soft, curranty, earthy appeal; this continues that tradition. There's a twist of bitterness on the finish that the wine could do without, but for the most part it's soft, juicy, enjoyable drinking.

A very big, advanced style with dark, stewed varietal fruit edged with green olive-like characters.

We tried the 2006 Pedler Greek Merlot too, but were not nearly as impressed as with this wine. We're told that this is still the current release - and, if so, happy days. The extra couple of years have done it a lot of good. It's soft and supple, leathery and blackberried, its fruit heart allowed to beat in the shadow of some attractive bottle-age complexity. It hasn't been spunked up with oak, but it hasn't needed to be: it's in fine form all by itself.
