Schubert Estate The Gosling Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This is the little baby to Schubert Estate's magnificent Goose-Yard Block Shiraz that delivers a hell of a lot of kick for a remarkably reasonable price. Layers of dark fruit flavour in a soft and seductive package. Proper wine at an indecent price.

Winemaker's Notes

Inky black with crimson hues, the Gosling Shiraz offers a deep, dark, brooding nose with traces of smoke, charcoal and cedar giving way to loads of blackberry and roasted herbs.

The full bodied palate is well delineated and loaded with rich black fruits, mocha roast, kirsch and subtle hints of silken French oak.

Velvety tannins ensure a long, cuddly, sofa-like finish making the wine thoroughly enjoyable in its youth and ideally suited to a cool winters evening and a generous serve of game.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Striking deep purple; lives up to the promise of its colour, with masses of blackberry and plum fruit, dark cooking spice and ripe tannins. Compelling value for a wine to drink now or in 10 years.

Roennfeldt Road is holy ground when it comes to the Barossa Valley and a wine like this shows why. Lavish balanced fruit, generously proportioned with the kind of complexity only seen in the better Barossa vineyards. And brilliant value too.

Because the fruit is less dense than Goose-yard, the excellent texture and structure is more evident in a wine with quality blackberry fruit, weight and length.

If you are looking for a fabulous Barossa Red to pass the cold Winter months, look no further than this cracking wine from Schubert Estate. In 2006, the Schuberts declassified a large proportion of their Goose-Yard block fruit to the Gosling. Barossa down to its bootstraps it is a supple Barossa style with layered red and blackberry fruits with a hint of spice and fine tannins to finish.
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Plenty of power and concentration; lively and focused, with touches of licorice and spice; good fruit and oak balance.

Good colour; elegant, medium-bodied wine with appealing blackberry and spice fruit, finishing with fine tannins. Very good value.
