Scorpo Estate Rose

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Produced from shiraz, this is at the drier end of the scale, and shows attractive red berries and cherries, with hints of dairy and dried herbs. The palate is lighter-bodied and slightly talcy, with strawberry flavours, very light tannins, and a dry, bright finish. Bring on the poached salmon!

Winemaker's Notes

Pale copper toned salmon pink – the nod to Provence starts here. The 2013 Scorpo Rosé has returned to 100% Pinot Noir after coming from Shiraz for the last few years. The pretty nose has Provence-like tones too in its pretty, light pink fruits and floral tones, with little white spice and a delicate mineral note. Medium to light, it’s dry and delicate from the start with sweet musk, pink rose, and raspberry and pink grapefruit flavours. Sophisticated and delicious rosé.

This has a very pale colour and shows a light, bright and sweet smelling nose of cherry and strawberry fruits, some fresh sweet pastry too. The palate texture s right on: lovely shape and fleshy appeal, cherry and strawberry flavour, balanced and in the drier end of the spectrum.

If you've ever said you'll never drink rosé, this is the wine for you. Ultra-sophisticated, it's savoury and complex with rose petal perfume, flavours of tomato and savoury herbs, supported by a fine, mineral backbone. Impeccably constructed, beautifully balanced, this is a wine that will convert any aficionado.

If memory serves, when the first vintage of this Mornington Peninsula wine came out a few years ago they'd held it back for a while, presumably to build some complexity (you'd be surprised what good rose can do in time). But for me, it robbed the wine of all the joy, pizzazz and exuberance of youth. Fortunately, that misdemeanour has been rectified. Enjoy the joy, pizzazz and exuberance of youth. Of course, memory can be dodgy.
