Scotchmans Hill Swan Bay Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This is a mighty effort from a supposedly difficult year. It's more full-bodied and fleshier than expected, with smells of dark berries, raspberries, toast, char and earthy spices on the nose, whilst the palate has some finesse, with dark berry and peppery flavours, a solid line of tannins, and a red fruited, earthy and toast finish. This will cellar for a couple of years.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep purple in appearance. The bouquet displays a complex nose of ripe dark fruits, red berries and plums; with a touch of liquorice and chocolate. This is balanced by spice and well integrated cedar oak. A full flavoured and complex wine which is dominated by plum, cherry and red fruits. This is rounded out by white pepper, liquorice and spice, with a cedary oak finish. The wine gains overall balance from tight but fine grain tannins and acid. The palate is intense, long, and lingering. This is a wine to be enjoyed over the next 2 to 4 years.

Scotchmans Hill Swan Bay Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2012 Vintage) says
Terrific value. Savoury, peppery notes embedded in ripe, fleshy, dark cherried fruit. Builds good momentum and carries it right through the finish. Cool climate at every turn but a very good example of such.
Till 2024.

Curious labelling, the front prominently stating Bellarine Peninsula, the back label saying the grapes are from premium Victorian regions. Swan Bay itself is on the Bellarine Peninsula, but that is not enough. This should not distract attention from the wine in the glass, with rich cherry, plum, licorice and spice flavours welded together with the aid of ripe tannins.

Tyson Stelzer (2010 Vintage) says
This is outstanding value in a refined and beautifully textural style that carries considerable fruit concentration and more elegant balance even than Scotchmans Hill $65 flagship syrah! A stylish and complex shiraz of black plum and blackberry fruit, black pepper and subtle nuances of charcuterie complexity. Tannins are beautifully fine and textural, providing a fine-grained structure to support a long, linear finish.

Bright colour; red and black fruit bouquet, with a touch of clove; the palate is laden with sweet fruit, is medium-bodied, fleshy, generous and quite engaging; very good quality for the price.

Light- to medium-bodied peppery/spicy red and black fruits; mainly cool-grown fruit, with minimal oak and tannin inputs, but still has length.

Medium red-purple; clean cherry/berry fruit aromas on the bouquet and similar direct fruit flavours on the palate provide a simple, uncomplicated wine for everyday drinking.
