Sevenhill Inigo Shiraz

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Had a wine epiphany lately? The good folk at Sevenhill will be in a good position to assist as they come from a long line of Jesuit priests and their miraculous work in the vineyard is heavenly. Here’s a wine that reeks of regionality, the Clare Valley has a reputation for producing these long lived styles that are rich and full bodied. This wine is brimming with plum, dark fruits and tantalising spice. It would benefit from a decant and to be matched with a hearty rib-eye steak.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2012 vintage is widely acknowledged as one of the best of the past decade in many wine regions, including the Clare Valley. The vines were in good health following plentiful winter and spring rain in 2011 and consistent warm weather in January 2012, without any extreme periods of heat, contributed to steady, even ripening. Vintage started early on February 5 and the benevolent conditions of warm days and cool nights meant that the fruit was picked at optimum ripeness and flavour.

Aromas of lifted plum and cedar spice signal that the 2012 Inigo Shiraz is a serious wine. The palate is broody, rich with concentrated blackberry fruits, inspired by Sevenhill’s vast resources of old-vine Shiraz. The wine’s deep colour underlines the intense flavours and tannins. Subtle oak lingers on the palate to provide a delightful finish.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Estate-grown, with some of the vines over 100 years old. Strong colour, and with a decidedly full-bodied palate, black fruits with an emphatic finish deriving partly from the warmth of the alcohol; at this price, these are carping criticisms.

This really runs the gauntlet of ripeness, with aromas of ultra-ripe plum and fruitcake, some dates and old-wood complexity. The palate has swathes of ripe, fleshy fruit, really sweeping warmth and ripe, ripe tannins that finish nutty and soft. Drink young.

An unsung hero with great breeding thanks to the district winery and old vines. Ripe cheerful fruit showing regional mint and blackberry silky tannins with oak that will mature

Good colour; vivid purple hue; deep, dark and inky bouquet, with blackberry and liqueur cherry on offer; the palate is dense and chewy, with tarry tannins offsetting the generous fruit; a big wine, made very well, and given the dimensions of the wine and the 100-year-old vines, amazing value.

Dark, charry, toasty oak here - a stamp of the Sevenhill shiraz style. There are ripe plums and dark berries in abundance, a hint of licorice joins in on the palate and tannins arrive in fine, smooth and superbly resolved shape. Some old vine material adds soul - still integrating
