Seville Estate Reserve Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
If any evidence was required that this historic estate holds a lofty position among the Yarra greats, this magnificent release is certainly it. Wonderfully focused purity of pristine lemon, white peach and vanilla meet eminently honed and lively malic acidity. Wild fermentation in 30% new French oak barrels supports and propels its fruit without distracting from purity and line.

Feels classy from the get go - hint of struck match in perfume coupled to fresh stone fruit and some fine, cedary oak character. Layered and intense to tatse, lengthy, tightly coiled but with hues of wood and fine lees work in the mix, lending interest. Serious, adult chardonnay here.

Pale quartz; in the Chablis spectrum, with citrus and mineral characters running through the heart of the wine, and reflecting the cool vintage; it scores for its pristine elegance and length. Top gold Yarra Valley Wine Show Õ12.

Vibrant green hue; while the hand of the winemaker is evident, the concentration of the fruit requires such attention; rich, ripe, opulent and oaky at this early stage, but wait a little while and the parts will come together, as the savoury complexity comes to the fore; enjoy the estate wine as the Reserve matures.

Super-smoothly executed Chardonnay with a little reductive edge, grapefruit and lemon citrus notes, and lovely white stone fruit on offer too. The oak is neatly threaded in, and the combined lees stirring, barrel fermentation and wild yeast have created a sleek, pared-back savoury edge. On the palate it is a very composed wine too; lovely purity and quite ripe fruit flavours in the peach spectrum. Good length and balance; a great result.

Apart from the colour and the alcohol (both the same), takes the varietal and doubles everything (including the price); this is an exercise in intensity, finesse and balance, the oak seamlessly threaded through the stone fruit and citrus flavours, precise acidity drawing out the very long finish.

A terrific gold-medal-winning chardonnay (Yarra Valley Wine Show) from the upper Yarra that has a sheen of stylishly toasty oak on offer, flinty struck-match complexity, grapefruit and lemon; some peaches and nectarine too. The palate's concentrated and has impressive direction, attractive gently chewy texture, and some time ahead to develop.

A rich and heady combination of pear, nectarines, grilled nuts and a touch of spice from the carefully chosen oak; the palate delivers what the bouquet promises, with layers of intense white fruits, rapier-like acidity and a finish that holds on for a seriously long time; this will age beautifully.

Seville is one of the great sites of the Yarra, and only now is it returning to the great potential that it established decades ago. Chardonnay from this cool site is restrained, pure and mineral, with excellent grapefruit and white peach focus.

A complex wine, whole bunch-pressed, with strong barrel ferment and lees inputs; the fruit is not submerged on the palate, offering sweet nectarine and citrus through to a long finish.
