Shelmerdine Vineyards Pinot Noir

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

If Yarra Pinot is not some of the best in the land then we will happily eat our Cracka hat. So sure are we that you’ll love this style, that we will send you a roast duck if you are not satisfied. Shelmerdine are responsible for making some of the classiest Pinot in the region and this is just the kind of sexy suppleness we look for in the variety. Concentrated and perfumed with cherries, violets and earth, it’s medium bodied, spicy and velvety.

Winemaker's Notes

A warm low yielding vintage provided tiny Pinot Noir berries with intense concentration, evident in the glass. The nose has lifted aromatics; bursting with violets, cherries and rose petals, hallmarks of Pinot Noir grown in the Upper Yarra Valley and Lusatia Park Vineyard in particular. The fruit is supported by smoky spicy French oak. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied with pure dark cherries, extra spice, restrained oak and a lovely velveteen texture.

Shelmerdine Vineyards Pinot Noir

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Bright, clear crimson; an elegant, fine Pinot that nonetheless has considerable underlying complexity to its black cherry, spice and forest notes, oak in restraint; the finish is long and persistent.

From the legendary 1985 vines of the Upper Yarra vineyard of Lusatia Park, there is a cool lift of rose petals, red cherries, strawberries, an air of exotic spice and an undercurrent of undergrowth.

The estate pinot from Shelmerdine has plenty of meaty complexity in 2008; there are dark cherries and blue fruits, dark spices too. The palate is smooth and plush, delivering the same cherry and blue fruit experience amid fine, easygoing tannins and a fresh, juicy, smooth finish.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2008 Vintage) says
It's made from 25-year-old vines and ticks all the boxes of top-notch pinot noir. This wine takes the Shelmerdine label up a level. You can call it energetic or bright or ethereal or even, if you're feeling particularly snobbish, Burgundian - but whatever word you opt for, it all translates to 'bloody good'. This is a glorious pinot noir. It tastes of redcurrant and sour cherry and has a compelling, fanned-out, ever so persistent finish. There's also ample spice and swathes of tannin too. You know, it just about has it all.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Very good hue; remarkable depth to the cherry and plum fruit given (deliberately) low alcohol; touches of spice and oak, and good acidity; overall elegance.

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
There's plenty of toasty oak folded into this Yarra pinot fruit adding a shroud of smoky complexity, grilled meats and spices, some cherry fruit rolling through. The palate's straight-edged with smoky cherry flavour and approachable tannins below.

An elegant, finely drawn and structured pinot in a sotto voce style; fruit forward, but with sufficient silky tannins to sustain it.

Fragrant spiced cherry and plum aromas; light- to medium-bodied, with good length and balance, varietal character not threatened by over-extraction.

Fragrant, light spicy fruit; foresty characters on a long, savoury finish.

Lots of plum and black cherry; plenty of mid-palate flavour and structure; shortens marginally.

Quite savoury and restrained; shows its class with its drive through to the back palate, finish and aftertaste.
