Cracka Review

2011 reds out of McLaren Vale turned out pretty well, and this one from Shottesbrooke is an appealing lighter style of cab sav that shows appealing smells of cassis, cherry, mint and subtle chocolate on the nose. The palate is very medium-bodied, with a nice core of cassis and plummy fruit, fine and talcy tannins, and a balanced, dry finish. Great value at the price!

James Halliday (2011 Vintage) says
While no more than light-to medium-bodied, everything in this wine is in its right place; the varietal expression is clear, and neither minty nor herbal; the tannins are fine-grained and the oak precisely judged. Excellent value. 14.5% alc.

There is a lot of wine here for the price. Its excellent line, length and balance mean it can be enjoyed any time over this decade, or even two.

Very good hue and depth; picked at precisely the right moment, with a fragrant bouquet and a fresh medium-bodied palate, each showing excellent varietal fruit; has very good line, length and balance.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Deep crimson;pure varietal blackcurrant fruit drives the bouquet and palate; there are some of the dusty tannin of the merlot, but here the volume of fruit sustains them. Good value
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
We like it. It's spicy and saucy (hoisin-esque, according to Walsh) with flavours of dark chocolate, blackberry and blackcurrant. It's a wine that needs to be decanted to show its best, particularly because its tannins are leafy and firm and need some air to soften out. It has good weight and a good finish, though a slightly bitter aftertaste - for which we forgive it.
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
In typical Shottesbrooke style; medium-bodied and elegant; supple, smooth cassis and blackcurrant fruit; integrated oak and fine tannins. Gold medal Sydney Wine Show '07.
Australian Wine Companion 2008 2007
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Herb, olive and leaf aromas suggest some lack of ripeness; the palate, however, has quite sweet fruit.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Quite powerful; at the briary/earthy end of the spectrum, but the tannins are seamlessly interwoven to aid structure. Counter-cultural style.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
Jeremy Oliver (2002 Vintage) says
Dusty, herbal aromas of shaded cassis and stewed plum-like fruit precede a light, smooth and polished, but green-edged palate. lt begins with intense flavours of blackcurrant, raspberries and plums, with support from cedar/vanilla oak, but becomes more minty and herbal towards the finish.
Australian Wine Annual 2006 2005
James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Elegant blackberry and blackcurrant mix; has effortless length.
