Since the debut 1998 vintage, Sileni has produced a consistently excellent Hawke's Bay Chardonnay. The 2000 vintage was the first to include grapes from the company's new Plateau Vineyard at Maraekakaho. Hand-harvested, it got the works in the winery - whole-bunch pressing, fermentation (with some indigenous yeasts) in French oak barriques(65 percent new), full malolactic fermentation and nine months' maturation on gross lees, with weekly lees-stirring. Pale yellow and slightly creamy, with a rich, mealy, biscuity bouquet and very good concentration, it's a powerful, multi-faceted wine with sweet, grapefruit-like characters, an impression of ripeness and harmony and a sustained finish.
