The very harmonious 2000 vintage of this Hawke's Bay red is a blend of Merlot (75 per cent), Malbec (8 per cent), Cabernet Franc (13 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (4 per cent), matured for a year in French (principally) and American oak casks. Its rich, deep cassis, plum and spice flavours are seasoned with slightly sweet oak, with good density through the palate, complex, savoury, leathery touches emerging and a smooth, rich finish. Drink 2003.

Dense red-purple; very ripe blackberry, mulberry, plum and chocolate aromas flood the bouquet; the palate is not quite as luscious as the bouquet suggests it will be but has a sweet entry and mid-palate before tailing off ever-so-slightly on the finish. Happily, the oak does not try to compensate.

The 1998 vintage of this Hawke's Bay red looked brilliant when I tasted it prior to bottling. The colour is dark and noble; the bouquet beautifully fragrant, spicy and rich; the palate superbly concentrated, with a wealth of warm cassis, plum and spice flavour, soft acidity and buried tannins. It's already dangerously drinkable, but looks great for 2002+.
