Spier Savanha Sun Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

If a soft and juicy merlot is what you are looking for, then here's one out of South Africa that would be right up your alley. It's quite a full-bodied number that hasn't seen much oak and shows lots of ripe plums and red fruits on the nose, along with a whiff of star anise. The palate is fulsome, soft and fruity, with balanced acidity, soft tannins, and a silky, easy-going finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Vineyard: Bush vines and five-wire Perold trellised vines aged 10-20 years yielded the grapes for this wine. The vineyards received supplementary drip irrigation and produced 8-15 tons per hectare.

Winemaking: Grapes were handpicked at optimum ripeness, sorted, de-stemmed and gently crushed. The juice was chilled to 10-12ºC to enable cold maceration prior to fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Daily pump overs were carried out during fermentation to extract further colour and flavour. Wines showing well-preserved fruit were selected for blending and fining. Sterile bottling took place after 6 months of maturation and integration.

Appearance: Rich regal red.

Nose: Plums and raspberries on the nose.

Palate: An accessible and fruit-driven wine with layers of red berries and a hint of spice on the palate, supported by a soft tannin structure.

Food: Roasted pork, meat loaf, chicken casseroles, pizza and meaty pastas.

Alcohol: 14.5%

GI: South Africa: Western Cape, predominately from Breedekloof region within the Western Cape.
