St Helena Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1996 Vintage) says
At its best this is a weighty Canterbury wine with strong lemon/apple flavours and a crisp, steely finish. The '95 is lemony and crisp, with reasonable flavour depth, but lacks the richness of a top vintage. The 1996 is from a year in which St Helena elected not to produce a Reserve Chardonnay, but it is still clearly superior to the '95- Oak-aged for 10 months, it is a pale yellow, full-bodied wine, savoury, lemony and flinty, with a Chablis-Iike structure. A slightly austere, flavoursome wine, already drinking well, it will appeal to those who enjoy their Chardonnay firm and flinty.
