St Jerome Matuka Cabernet Merlot

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (1996 Vintage) says
This strapping Henderson, West Auckland red is named in honour of Davorin and Miro Ozich's father, Mate, who in Croatia was often called 'Matuka'. A powerful wine which makes no concessions to early-drinking appeal, it is based on estate-grown fruit, matured in French oak barriques for up to two years. It is typically a robust red with a strong surge of blackcurrant and cedarwood flavours, buttressed by firm tannins. The 1996 vintage is not one of the greatest, with fullish, developed colour, mouthfilling body and very mellow, spicy, leafy, nutty flavours.
