Of Corbans' range of Stoneleigh Vineyard Marlborough wines, in quality terms this is the greatest success. Deliciously fragrant in its youth, it is typically a refined wine with good body, excellent depth of lemony, slightly sweet flavour and a crisp, slightly honied, impressively long finish. The wine's style is currently evolving; Michael Kluczko, Corbans' wine operations manager, is keen for future vintages to display more sheer varietal character, less sweetness and less Botrytis. Pale lemon/green, with fresh lemon/apple scents, the 1998 vintage is still very youthful. A style departure, with excellent weight and power in a rather Australian style, it's markedly drier than in the past, with lemony, limey flavours, crisp and slightly flinty, with good intensity and a lingering finish. Still a baby, it needs time; open 2001.
