Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
An early, rustic shiraz whose dusty, spicy and meaty bouquet of small red and black berries, dark plums and gentle oak reveals subtle nuances of graphite and mineral plus a faint herbal note. Full to medium-bodied, it?s slow to emerge from the glass, unfolding spicy layers of blackberries, mulberries, dark plums and dark chocolate framed by firm powdery tannins. It finishes long and earthy, with a vivacious core of flavour and a soft acidity.

Jeremy Oliver (2007 Vintage) says
Strong, sumptuous and slightly raw-edged, with a dark, mineral and smoky bouquet whose aromas of dark plums, blackberries and redcurrants reveal some whole bunch-derived herbal dustiness, but just lacks a little freshness and primary fruit. It's powdery, assertive and unyielding, massively concentrated, firm and drying. It certainly needs bottle-age, but does look somehow slightly stripped of fruit.

Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
Complex, savoury and powerful, with dark, meaty and slightly herbal-edged fruit framed by a firm, powdery extract of drying tannin. Its dusty bouquet of blackberries, dark plums and slightly herbal whole bunch characters reveals a hint of Bovril, while its earthy palate of dark red and black berry flavours overlies an assertive meaty, leathery presence. It's long and savoury, with drive and balance.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Good concentration of dark fruit, with a distinct leathery/ savoury edge to the bouquet; the palate is quite firm and dry, with plenty of volume and a hint of bay leaf on the finish
Australian Wine Companion 2010
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Deep-coloured and complex, with abundant red and black fruits, considerable toasty oak and firm tannins; a big mouthful of wine.

Nick Stock (2005 Vintage) says
This is a masterful statement of bright, complex vineyard-driven character and insightful winemaking. Freshly ground hard spices, a really elevated and expressive fragrance. Power meets finesse on the palate: the tannins are velveteen, flavours ride in the dark berry spectrum, finishes with grace.
Good Australian Wine Guide 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
A powerful, dark, sumptuous and meaty shiraz whose deep, briary expression of dark berry/plum, fruit, dusty spices and cedar/chocolate/vanilla oak are framed by almost a furry grip of fine, drying tannin. It's backed by suggestions of mint, dark olive and iodide and reveals an underlying herbal presence that during the wine's youth contributes a stalky edge to its tannins. It's very complete, firm and balanced, and should age particularly well.

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2005 Vintage) says
Either we're behind on things or Sutton Grange releases its syrah with a bit of bottle age - a good thing if the latter is the case. Character, attitude, personality - that's the schtick of this wine. It's meaty, peppery, minty, blackberried and drilled with dry licorice - it's a wild array of scents and flavours. It's by no means shy when it comes to tannin, either, with so many plump folds that the question arose as to whether there is too much. This would be a good one to take a wager on. Long-term, it could be outstanding
The Big Red Wine Book 2009/10 2009
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Deep, bright purple-red; medium- to full-bodied; powerful blackberry, black plum, spice and earth flavours, the tannins ripe but substantial.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
A medium- to full-bodied wine with blackberry, spice and nuances of dark chocolate; persistent, ripe tannins. An impressive first vintage; 19 months in French oak.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Redcurrant, raspberry, plum, mint and herb aromas and flavours; far more delicate than the 14.1° alcohol suggests. Nice twist of herb on the finish.
