Te Awa Left Field Syrah

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This Hawkes Bay Syrah aint from the left field, nor the right field, but straight down the centre! Brilliant spicy NZ Syrah that could take over the world for its interesting, complex fruit characters and real backbone. Earth, spice, blackberry – everything you could want from fine Syrah but without the punch in the face you get in some modern Australian Shiraz. And you know the best thing – food – this will go an absolute treat with some pink lamb chops – lap it up.

Winemaker's Notes

Left Field Syrah is our response to wine lovers who've asked us for a food-friendly Syrah that shows all the lovely floral, spicy cracked pepper and fruit cake notes of the variety combined with soft and velvety tannins that make it a pleasure to drink upon release.

Michael Cooper (2009 Vintage) says
The boldly coloured 2009 vintage of this estate-grown Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay red is mouthfilling and sweet-fruited, with rich plum and black-pepper flavours, and a hint of liquorice. Finely textured and vibrantly fruity, it's likely to be at its best 2012+.

WINESTATE (2007 Vintage) says
Very tight, peppery wine that need a lots more cellaring to really shine. Has a lovely fresh, mushroomy nose and a very savoury/earthy palate with long tannins in support.

Michael Cooper (2002 Vintage) says
The tightly focused and complex 2002 vintage was grown in the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke's Bay and matured for 14 months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Richly coloured, it shows good structure and potential, with distinctly peppery, plummy, spicy, nutty flavours of excellent ripeness and depth and a firm finish.
