Te Awa Zone 10 Cabernet Sauvignon

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2002 Vintage) says
Straight (unblended) Cabernet Sauvignon is out of fashion in New Zealand, but this wine works brilliantly. Grown in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawke's Bay, it comes from part of the vineyard that 'ripens behind other zones', giving grapes 'with more generosity and less austerity than other Cabernet Sauvignon plantings'. The 2002 vintage was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (half new). Dense and youthful in colour, it's still a baby, with highly concentrated cassis, spice and mint flavours, cedary oak adding complexity and a firm backbone of tannin. It's a tightly structured, very rich, complete wine, worth tucking away for several years.
