Telmo Rodriguez 'LZ' Tempranillo
The LZ is the absolute 'get on' value wine in the Telmo Rodriguez range. Made in the 'Joven' style (which means young and low-oak usage, if any), it displays youthful, primal smells of raspberries, black cherries and earthiness on the nose. The palate is more medium-bodied and brightly fruited, with red berry and dried herb flavours, smooth tannins, and a dry, soft finish. It's made to drink over a 3-5 year term, and would be great with some nachos.
Rioja is a pretty confusing appellation: you might get old-fashioned wine (high-crop fruit, lots of daggy barrel impact from ages spent in old American oak), or you may get low-crop, fresh modern estate wine. They can be Tempranillo, Garnacha or some blend of the two. The region is also divided into a high, cool part with poor soils (Riojas Alta and Alavesa) and a relatively low-altitude, warm, alluvial part (Rioja Baja). As ever, get to know individual estates, is our advice. A jam packed cranberry+field herb nose – fresh fruit and earth, lift and depth ... The palate is perfumed and really harmonious - built beautifully on Telmo’s trademark natural fruit tannin-acid twin-track. Juicy and deft, it’s not just good and typical, nor merely delicious .
