The Crater Rim Black Friday Pinot Noir

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Waipara is so hot right now. Hot like a tar road on a sunny January Sunday. Hot like a bowl of soup straight out of the microwave (without that annoying hot/cold thing that microwave soup gets). Suffice to say it's hot... Wines like this show us how too, a full bodied Pinot Noir with intense Pinot flavours and that wonderful Waipara tang. A beautiful Pinot this, no question about it.

Winemaker's Notes

The fruit for this wine was sourced from a single vineyard on the Omihi hills overlooking the Waipara valley. This dense clay over limestone vineyard is closely planted (6000 plants per hectare) and cropped at less than 1kg per vine. In the winery the fruit was immediately de-stemmed with 5% of whole bunches retained. The wine was naturally fermented by wild yeast in wooden, open-top fermenters. The wine is transferred into a mix of one, two and three year old French oak barrels where it matured on fermentation lees for 18 months. This wine was not fined or filtered before being bottled on 20th February 2011.

WINESTATE (2008 Vintage) says
Savoury, earthy nose with a sprinkling of dried herbs. Palate short and simple, with flavour intensity.
