Thompson Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Thompson are one of those fly under the radar wineries far more interested in the quality of their wines than bathing in the accolades. This Cabernet is the result of another dream vintage in the Margaret River and rewards with vivid aromas of blackcurrant and chocolate. The palate is assertive with mouth-filling tannins and ripe black fruits ensuring a great match for lamb.

Winemaker's Notes

This wine has a lovely deep red plum colour. The nose exhibits classic ripe blackcurrant, with hints of dark chocolate. The nose follows through to the palate displaying blackcurrant and red berry flavours with hints of dark chocolate and tobacco. It has an attractive succulence, velvety tannins and finishes with great persistence.

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Restrained and herbaceous, with an earthy, cedary and autumnal bouquet of berry, plum and prune-like fruit plus a thin, ethereal and green-edged palate whose fruit is rather elusive and fragile.

Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
Lightly greenish, with a dusty, cedary bouquet of cassis, raspberries, red plums and dark cherries backed by sweet, lightly smoky vanilla oak. Medium in weight, its modest depth of green-edged cassis, red berries and cherries and fresh cedary oak is framed by a slippery, slightly metallic extract.

A most beautiful expression of Margaret River cabernet sauvignon. The addition of a small amount of merlot and cabernet franc makes an impression of the nose with beautiful perfumed qualities The palate is all about style and refinement. Effortless and long with a fine oak and tannin balance. Superb.

Pure and intense cabernet sauvignon aromas on the nose. Cigar box, minerally black currant and black olive with a subtle leafy tobacco character. The palate is long and angular with fine minerally tannins and fine grained oak supporting some incredibly intense yet most refined fruit. It's a wine of some power but delivered with really grace and style.

Bright crimson; ticks all the boxes for Margaret River cabernet; the bouquet is fragrant, promising the cedar and blackcurrant fruit that the medium-bodied palate duly delivers; the fruit, oak and tannins are totally in balance, and the finish is long and satisfying.

Big, broad wine with great structure and balance and well-defined, developed, chocolaty mulberry/cassis fruit.

Very good colour; generous but high-quality blackcurrant fruit immediately appears on the fragrant bouquet backed by cedary oak, and continues on the well-balanced and structured palate, which has ample tannin suppor

Super wine from a super vintage. It's largely Cabernet with some important smaller additions of Merlot for the palate and Cabernet franc for the aromas. Classical powerful Margaret River Cabernet with all those black currant and black olive influences. The ripe firm tannins add substantial to the palate feel while the oak is perfectly infused.Ê

Brightly coloured; has real depth and complexity, as floral aromas drift over cassis and cedar; the tannins are ample, very fine and ripe, drawing out the palate to a very long, even and harmonious finish.

Classic Margaret River Cabernet from the deep bouquet of blackcurrant and leafy tobacco to the powerful intensity on the palate. It's packed with ripe tannins and opulent dense fruit that powers through to a very long controlled finish.

Fresh, lively cassis berry offset by touches of earth and olive; typical Margaret River structure; needs time to soften.
