Three Hills Grenache Shiraz Mataro

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Looks like GSM blends have found a home in the Margaret River if this wine from Three Hills (a label for Happs Wines) is anything to go by. It's a cracking rich style of wine that shows appealing smells of dark fruits, mocha and licks of meaty savouriness on the nose. The palate is lush and fleshy with bucket loads of ripe berries and earthy spices, a touch of mintiness, talcy tannins, and a juicy, lush finish. It's a ballsy style that would go well with a rich lamb casserole.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Red with a red/purple hue.

Nose: An attractive aroma of raspberry, cherry, truffle and red fruits with slight coffee, cracked pepper and eucalypt notes.

Palate: Medium to full bodied with rich red fruits, cherry cola and forest floor flavours combining with hints of black olive and fresh herb. The palate is soft with fine grain tannin, a long slightly chalky finish and an intense cherry aftertaste.

Grenache 61% Shiraz 31% and Mataro 8%

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Bright, although not deep, purple; the impact of the wine on the palate comes as a surprise after the far softer eastern Australia models; this is all about the Northern Rhone Valley, not Chateauneuf-du-Pape, its savoury black fruits, with touches of herbs and olive, doubtless pleasing Erl Happs when he took the plunge and planted so many varieties on his Three Hills vineyard.

Ray Jordan (2005 Vintage) says
There is a distinct regional vineyard character in this wine. Lots of leafy fruit but the fruit is ripe and the tannins slightly sinewy. Lean and angular wine of some style. Quite different from the big fleshy GSMs from South Australia.

Good colour; a full-bodied, concentrated wine, radically different from SA blends; has a strong tannin backbone to support the plum and raspberry red fruits; 290 cases made.
