Three Hills Merlot

Cracka Review

Colour: Dark red with a dark red hue.

Nose: Attractive aroma, displaying intense black jube, plum skin and slight minty note with attractive cedar oak.

Palate: Big rich intense wine. This is a merlot with depth and genuine fruit sweetness. Flavours are ripe and sweet with the black jubes character dominating over some toasty oak, plum and red fruit flavours. Tanins are evident and slightly powdery , but are soaked up by the intense fruit. A merlot with fruit sweetness, structure and length – amazing !!

Good colour; strong varietal expression might have been stronger still at more moderate alcohol levels; not clear why picking should have been so delayed; Ribena-like flavours with some black olive notes

There have been a number of impressive merlots from Happs in recent years, and this is another. It is more powerful and intense than most merlots you find, but with that it's refined and elegant. Firm fine ripe tannins and beautifully weight oak add to an impressively long and focussed palate. A merlot with balls.

Good colour; medium-bodied, supple and smooth; raspberry and cassis fruit with touches of savoury spice; a marvellously elegant merlot.

Super-powerful and concentrated, somewhat over the top for the variety; exudes red and black fruits; needs taming in bottle.

James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Medium to full red-purple; the very ripe bouquet has slightly gamey overtones with some spice; there is a distinct change of direction on the palate which is powerful and savoury rather than fruity; has depth and length, but is on the austere side, reflecting its varietal base.
