Tim Adams Reserve Riesling

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2010 Vintage) says
Exemplary, perfectly balanced Australian riesling in a leaner, finer style that remains simply packed with pure. pristine fruit. Heady and floral, it's scented with pear, apple and lime juice aromas backed by nuances of blue and white flowers. Long and focused, its crystal-clear citrus and apple flavours are coated with dusty phenolics and wrapped in a racy, brittle acidity.

I find most “museum releases” of Australian riesling quite disappointing, on the whole, which I understand is not part of the accepted or common wisdom. This wine though justifies the (reserve) tag and the (hold back from release) treatment. It’s alive with scent, feels textural and (relatively) rich, and has a tonne of sizzle though the finish.

A riesling at the very start of what will undoubtedly be a very long life; the lemon and lime fruit and minerally acidity in lockstep balance. Leave for at least five years, and then have patience.

Approach with caution: Open this wine young and it has such a cut of searing acidity that it will slice you clean open. With tremendous energy and incredible definition, power and length, it screams out for a decade to soften.

Intensely wound citrus/grapefruit aromas; excellent mouthfeel, with slippery acidity supporting mouth-watering citrus and apple flavours.

Double R is Tim’s new secret weapon. MJ discovered this wine in a bar in McLaren Vale, of all places, and it seemed at the time that Tim Adams wanted to hide it from the UK market, but we put an abrupt stop to that plan. Unusually for Riesling, this is a more powerful and structured wine, rather than being tighter and more introverted, and this means that it can be used cleverly with food and wine matching, stepping up to Thai pork dishes with ease, and every serious Asian fish dish you could think of. If more people drank this style of Riesling we are certain that Chardonnay consumption would be dented.

A clean bouquet, with some minerally overtones; very tight and very classic in the mouth, with extremely intense, lingering citrussy acidity; to keep for your wake
