Toolangi Reserve Chardonnay

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2008 Vintage) says
A very bright, almost electric green-tinged gold colour, this has immense concentration. Taken from the most select section of the Toolangi vineyard, it offers citrus-soaked nectarine and white peach, with a decent serve of complex oak toast and spice. The palate s a powerhouse, showing weight and concentration with powerful structure, lemon and peach flavour. Acidity good, texture impeccable. A breathtaking chardonnay - symphonic!

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
Deep gold, green hue; the concentration and depth of fruit in this wine are compelling, showing a savoury grilled nut and charcuterie-driven personality; rich, unctuous and mouth coating, the backbone of acidity plays a merely supporting role to such hedonistic offerings; long, toasty, tasty and complex.
Australian Wine Companion 2013 2012
James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Ripe and highly expressive bouquet with lots of toasty oak, grilled nuts and nectarine; the wine has pure power at all levels, and needs time to integrate all of its parts, and will go a long way

Nick Stock (2007 Vintage) says
The maestro up at Giaconda has worked some serious magic on this Yarra Valley fruit; it has fragrant, sweet French oak and citrus in every guise, immensely concentrated. The palate's scintillatingly concentrated and powerful, with a no-holds-barred texture and fruit intensity to spare. Long peach and cashew finish.
The Good Wine Guide 2011
James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
More colour than the other Chardonnays, ultra-complex, with strong winemaking fingerprints giving a warm toasty/nutty/creamy texture.
Australian Wine Companion 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2006 Vintage) says
A heavily worked chardonnay with a pungent butterscotch driven bouguet whose toasty, bacony and mealy influences tend to subdue its figgy fruit aromas. Rather broad and overblown, its luscious, creamy palate has an equally strong presence of leesy, bacony and buttery artefact. It is beginning to tire and lacks great length.
Australian Wine Annual 2010 2009
Angus Hughson (2006 Vintage) says
If you love Giaconda Chardonnay then this will certainly impress. Just like Giaconda it is a big wine with plenty of winemaking influence apparent - bold oak, plenty of leesy character plus nmistakable wild yeast complexity, and all bound together by a streak of acidity that also extends the finish. Multi- layered with intriguing complexity it is a very serious Australian Chardonnay and a wine that will flower over the next decade.
James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Far more depth and texture than most Yarra chardonnays, almost headed into Margaret River territory; perhaps the Rick Kinzbrunner touch, given major winemaking inputs which augment every flavour nuance.

Nick Stock (2005 Vintage) says
It's business time! Funky complex and well-judged heady winemaking influence, the oak is wedged in tight, some flinty struck-match aromas sit across cool reserved grapefruit aromas. The palate's long and enticing, zesty flavours punch in a straight line of smooth rich stone fruits, some nougat and a smoky after-bum.
Good Australian Wine Guide 2009 2008
Jeremy Oliver (2005 Vintage) says
Quite a developed colour, this chewy and sumptuously textured chardonnay sports a heavily worked, slightly cooked and grainy perfume of quince, grapefruit, sweet oak and honeysuckle. It's round and generous, with deep citrus and melon skin-like flavour almost over-awed by the extent of smoky, creamy and matchstick-like winemaking artefact. It finishes with good, if not exceptional length, but retains plenty of freshness.
Australian Wine Annual 2008 2007
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Ultra-complex and concentrated; remarkable for the '04 vintage, having outstanding richness, texture and structure to the ripe stone fruit flavours; quite Burgundian. Made by Rick Kinzbrunner.
Australian Wine Companion 2007 2006
James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Light to medium green-yellow; textured, complex and powerful, showing its 14° alcohol; ripe fig, hazelnut and peach fruit; balanced acidity. Made at Giaconda.
Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005
James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Very complex barrel-ferment inputs; distinct Burgundian twist; powerful, concentrated and complex; melon, fig and creamy/toasty overlays.
Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004
James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Medium yellow-green; a strongly Burgundian, complex bouquet with obvious barrelferment/ solids aromas, then a similarly powerful and complex palate, with the fingerprints of contract winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner everywhere.
