Trentham Estate Merlot

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Smooth, rich and fruity is the theme with this value red from Trentham Estate. There's plenty of cassis, dark berries and dark chocolate on the nose, along with a hint of star anise spice. This all translates to the fuller-bodied, sweetly-fruited palate that is supported by balanced acidity, gentle tannins, and a silky, fleshy fruited finish. No need to think too hard about it, this is one you can enjoy a glass of everyday.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep red in colour with lifted aromas of cherry and mulberry with a hint of mocha; flavours of sweet plum and spice with subtle savoury French oak. A medium to full bodied wine with velvety tannins, long and soft with a silky smooth finish.

Alcohol: 13.5%

Light red-purple; a controlled mix of plum and red berry fruit on the one hand, and lesser savoury/olive characters on the other; best is its light- to medium-bodied structure and texture, entirely appropriate for merlot.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Fresh, lively, small red berry fruits in a light- to medium-bodied frame; keeps its balance and thrust through to the finish. Punches above its weight.

Predominantly blackcurrant and some cassis; perhaps closer to cabernet sauvignon, but doesn't have any savoury characters (good or bad), the warm region prevailing.

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Strong red-purple; soft, supple, light- to medium-bodied wine; dark fruits with a hint of olive, good balance and extract. Good value.

James Halliday (2002 Vintage) says
Medium red-purple; typically good mouthfeel and texture; a nice mix of savoury and darker fruits; very good finish.

Jeremy Oliver (2001 Vintage) says
Pleasingly intense, early-drinking merlot whose light aromas of dark cherries and plums are backed by cedar/vanilla and chocolate oak influences with a hint of meatiness. Ripe and juicy, its jammy expression of dark cherry/plum flavours and sweet oak finish pleasingly soft and approachable.

James Halliday (2001 Vintage) says
Typical Trentham style, with an excellent touch in winemaking; savoury edges to sweet berry fruit; fine tannins.
Australian Wine Companion 2005 2004
James Halliday (2000 Vintage) says
Light to medium red-purple; the bouquet has a mix of earth, berry, leaf and a hint of vanilla; the palate has very appealing mouthfeel, with gently soft and sweet fruit.
Australian Wine Companion 2004 2003
James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Light to medium red with just a touch of purple; the bouquet does have varietal character in a somewhat sappy/vegetal mode, the palate with a touch more sweet fruit. Has some of the slightly silky texture one is entitled to expect from Merlot.
