In top years, this is a finely balanced wine in the classic claret style, with intense cassis, plum and spice flavours and finely integrated oak. The 2000 vintage is a blend of equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (with 9 per cent Cabernet Franc), matured for 20 months in French oak casks (30 per cent new). It's a richly coloured wine with very good depth of ripe blackcurrant, spice and nut flavours and firm tannins.

A star of the vintage, the 1997 is a densely packed Hawke's Bay red, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon (70 per cent), Merlot (25 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (5 per cent), grown in the Gimblett Road shingles and matured for 15 months in predominantly new French oak barriques. Spicy and fragrant on the nose, with deep, bright colour, it is highly concentrated and firmly tannic, with a rich array of blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours eiched with nutty oak. Complex and tautly structured, with a powerful finish, it looks ser for a long life.
