Tyrrell's Belford Single Vineyard Semillon

Expert Reviews

Nick Stock (2011 Vintage) says
The Belford Vineyard is a well-drained sandy site that has been growing on its own roots since 1933. The nose is whisper-clean, showing bright apple, lime and lemon fruits - some very convincing concentration here. The palate's svelte, linear and very even, with great balance and effortless length. Should develop admirably.

Light, bright straw-green; the bouquet is still youthful, with a hint of beeswax before the focus moves onto the elegant, ripe citrus palate, with energy that is easy to miss, the acidity of the aftertaste the framework for the future.

Tyson Stelzer (2006 Vintage) says
Belford is Vat 1 priced for the real world. Vines with almost eighty years of practise produce restrained, backward, tightly-coiled semillon infused with mineral texture, lemon blossom perfume and crunchy lime fruit.

James Halliday (2005 Vintage) says
Vivid green hue; completely unevolved, pristine and as fresh as a daisy; lemon, slate and a touch of straw are evident; the full tale is told on the palate, with rapier-like acidity, drawing out the tightly wound fruit to a staggeringly long conclusion; a wonderful single-vineyard experience.

Lemon lavender, gets honey with age, fuller fruit in youth and a vineyard that takes a while to ripen and gets more hang time and later harvest. More lushness here within this austere style.

Tyson Stelzer (2005 Vintage) says
The typically more robust acidity of Belford provides great drive and freshness. The 2005 has struck that magic moment when toasty complexity meets zesty preserved lemon fruit and sparkling minerality. A wine of excellent concentration and persistence.
James Halliday (2004 Vintage) says
Vibrant green hue; pea pod and straw bouquet with a touch of lemon; the palate shows some generosity, and is approachable now while still remaining tightly wound; beautifully precise on the finish.

With no less than eight Tyrrell's Semillons worthy of a place in this line up, Belford comes out on top as one of the great bargains of the year. Pristine, youthful and backward, it barely looks half its age and is set for a very long life. It's streamlined and super-fine with remarkable river-stone minerality.
James Halliday (1999 Vintage) says
Complex herb, grass, citrus and mineral aromas; a vibrant palate, extremely long finish and lingering aftertaste.

James Halliday (1998 Vintage) says
Still evolving; tight, crisp and long; fresh, bright aftertaste.
Australian Wine Companion 2006 2005
James Halliday (1997 Vintage) says
Great green-yellow; complex, strong herb, spice and lanolin varietal fruit; long, lingering, intense and fresh.
