Tyrrell's Vat 1 Hunter Semillon

Expert Reviews

Rob Geddes MW (2012 Vintage) says
Judging high quality young semillon is an Australian speciality. Subtle fruit with strength, citrus lemon sunlight soap backed by a stone minerality, the fruit intensity is there but its a youthful flavour with a lemon finish after the long fruit platform. It has the texture, length, acid texture and structure and it will take its time to shine.

The display of 14 gold medals and seven trophies on the bottle borders on the vulgar, however richly it deserves this haul. It is still a pale, bright green, and the lemon/mineral flavours are exceptionally fresh and vibrant, lingering for minutes on the finish and aftertaste; a freak wine that will live as long as any red of a similar age.

"There's a balancing act to when you pick semillon," Bruce Tyrrell said when he visited to introduce this wine recently. "Everyone said we were mad to pick this one so early!" Bruce had the last laugh, with a wine that captures a wonderfully ripe and brilliantly pure fruit profile, within a palate of searing acidity and classic Vat 1 energy. Concentrated and intense lemon and preserved lemon meet notes of slowly developing complexity of roast nuts. This warmer, softer year has produced a Vat 1 to enjoy while the 2005 sleeps.

Super-fine fragrance in this top-shelf Tyrrell's semillon, with pristine lemon and lime citrus aromas, some grassy nuances, and the very beginnings of bottle-derived savoury notes. The palate has immaculate flavours of lemon and lime; it stands alone for its level of concentration and fine-tuned power, building lemon pith through the finish and leaving a long, tingling trail of acid-driven flavour in its wake.

This is a wine that must be experienced to be believed. Ageing at the pace of a giant sea turtle, it’s still a vibrant straw-green at almost seven years of age. The freshness on the palate follows unerringly, singing with kaffir lime and lemon, pepper, cut grass and anise. With scintillating acidity, brilliant citrus cut, sensational line, incredible persistence and chalky minerality, this is one of the great Vat 1s of all time.

Bright green-straw; fine, floral lemon juice aromas, as much akin to Riesling as Semillon; brilliantly fresh, fine, long and lingering mouthfeel. Bottles as good as this one are to die for. Top gold medal Sydney Wine Show '06.

Long and seamless, this slowly maturing Hunter semillon has a faintly buttery and toasty bouquet of melon and citrus, backed by delicate floral aromas. Its smooth and savoury palate reveals a deep core of fruit with tobacco-like and chalky undertones. Exceptionally tight and focused, it finishes with refreshingly tangy acidity.

The Hunter's most sublime semillon vintage of the 1990s is a stunner at eleven years of age. With an amazingly vibrant green hue, this is one of the slowest vintages for Vat 1. There are still primary characters of lime and peppermint, with gorgeous pepper spice developing. Sublime semillon.

Fantastic, glowing green-yellow; an utterly magical combination of complexity and vibrant freshness; its 12 trophies and 30 gold medals say it all.
