This wine is very complex with aromas of plum and blueberry. Notes of classy oak, refined and powerful with a medium bodied fresh acid and good depth with concentrated fruit and tannin.

Tyrrell's Vat 8 Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
A pristine and polished wine that seems to transcend varieties and instead embraces origin and producer; medium-bodied and simply silky in texture, the red fruit, fresh leather and fine spices of the two regions marry seamlessly, culminating in a long and expansive, beautifully balanced finish.

Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
This is labelled as a shiraz cabernet but in fact is 96% shiraz (from the hallowed Hunter Valley dirt of the Moon Mountain, Mathews and Weinkeller vineyards) and just 4% cabernet sauvignon (from the Hilltops region). It has impressive purple colour in the glass and shows bright plum and ripe, dark cherry fruits, a hint of cassis, and subtle oak, thanks to the old-school large format this wine is aged in. The palate's plush, ripe and juicy, with plenty of red fruits and fine, long tannins underpinning it. Great balance, very measured and made for future enjoyment.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Good purple hue; the bouquet is starting to show the first signs of Hunter earth and leather; although the intense palate is still full of plum and blackberry fruit; has very good texture and balance, and is built for the long haul. Only the second time since '89 that Vat 8 has been 100% shiraz.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
Brightly coloured; ripe, almost sweet black fruit bouquet; plummy and full of spice on entry, the complexity builds up, and more savoury and dark fruit comes through with a complexing element of dried herb and leather; medium-bodied, long and richly fruited on the finish.
