If you are looking for something different and a little exciting to serve with your lamb stew and dumplings this week, have a crack at this full-bodied number out of Italy made from the native Calabrian grape, magliocco. This is quite a dense, sweetly-fruited wine due to the grapes being dried a little in the vineyard, and shows cherry and plums on the nose, along with some hints of cinnamon spice and toastiness. The palate is quite plush and smooth, with ripe fruit flavours, some softness to the tannins, bright acidity, and a nice cherry-like finish.

Winemaker's Notes

A ruby red colour with a good consistency. The bouquet has characteristics of red ripe fruit, wild strawberries and sweet spice aromas. A soft and balanced body.

Balbium is obtained from medium-young vineyards of Magliocco, a typical indigenous grape of Calabria. Grapes get a “leggera appassitura” (light dried) in the vineyards to improce concentration. 12 hours of low temperature maceration and a short maceration. The wine is bottled after a 12 months aging in big casks.

This wine is produced from the illustrious zone surrounding Altomonte known as Balbia. So named for the indigenous wine "balbium" a homage to the Roman emperor Decius Caelius Calvinus Balbinus. Born into nobility around 170 A.D., Balbinus ascended from consul and then governor of Calabria to co-emperor (along with Pupienus) of the Roman Empire on April 22, 238. Though Balbinus's reign came to a violent end after a mere 99 days, the territory memorializing him --the Terre di Balbia-- has a lasting viticultural legacy. Produced from Magliocco grapes, it is then aged in oak casks prior to bottling. The Terra di Balbia “terrior” along with modern wine making techniques provide this wonderful full bodied wine that we can enjoy as the Emperor did 1800 years ago.
