Michael Cooper (1995 Vintage) says
Ranked among Hawke's Bay's most distinguished reds, this is a slightly more austere style than its voluptuous stablemate, the Reserve Cabernet Merlot (not produced since 1992). The '94 vintage has an abundance of ripe, blackcurrant and plum-evoking flavours and a complex, tight very persistent finish. The '95 () is a generous, youthful red, grown in Villa Maria's Ngakirikiri vineyard, near Gimblett Road, and French oak-aged for 20 months. mouthfilling, with deep, purple-flushed colour and a powerful surge of ripe, plummy, strongly spiced flavour, it is still vibrantly fruity, with an underlay of firm, supple tannins and a rich, trailing finish.
