The 1998 vintage is a top buy. Just 5 per cent of this Hawke's Bay wine was fermented and matured in oak casks for three months (the rest was handled in tanks), but the wood makes a definite contribution. It's a satisfying and distinctive wine with strong yet delicate flavours of melon, fig and citrus fruits, a touch of complexity and a rounded finish. Tasted prior to bottling, the 1999 (not rated) was full and fresh, with plenty of lively melon and lime-evoking flavour.
