Vidal White Series Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Here we have another well priced, highly sippable wine from EnZed producer Vidal. It's and soft, smooth, slinky drink that shows juicy plums and red berries on the nose and palate, along with some licks of cedar and cinnamon spice. Gentle tannins and friendly acidity complete the package of this great value red.

Winemaker's Notes

Fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards in the Hawkes Bay region where typically warm and dry conditions dominate the growing season. These conditions combined with free draining soils and low yields allow us to harvest fruit exhibiting purity and ripeness, characters which are expressed in the wine.

Nose: Displays aromas of red fruits and spice.

Palate: Flavours of plum, blackcurrant and cedar, the smooth finish on the palate is supported by supple, approachable tannins.

Food: This wine is an excellent match with grilled meats.

Cellaring: This wine can be enjoyed upon release but it has the ability to age gracefully for 2 – 3 years from vintage date.

Alcohol: 12.5%

Grape Variety: Merlot 74%, Cabernet Sauvignon 17%, Malbec 6%, Cabernet Franc 3%

Vidal White Series Hawkes Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon

Expert Reviews

Michael Cooper (2011 Vintage) says
Easy-drinking blend of merlot (60 per cent) and cabernet sauvignon (29 per cent), with minor portions of malbec and cabernet franc, partly barrel-ages. Fullish in colour, fruity and smooth, with fresh berry, herb and spice flavours and a touch of complexity.

Michael Cooper (2010 Vintage) says
A great buy, labelled "White Series' since the 2010 vintage. The 2009 is a blend of Merlot (68 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (17 pet cent), Malbec (9 pet cent) and Cabernet Franc (6 per cent), 60 per cent barrel-aged (in seasoned French and American oak). A strong, vibrantly fruity red, it is full-coloured and silky-textured, with blackcurrant, spice and olive flavours, showing excellent concentration, and a perfumed bouquet. The 2010 vintage is dark and fleshy, with fine-grained tannins and loads of fresh, plummy, spicy flavour
