Nick Stock (2009 Vintage) says
An amalgam of declassified Barolo parcels that are given the same elevage as the rest of the Barolo fruit, but they just don t measure up for Castiglione. The nose has terrific ripeness without any overripeness, dark slate minerals, terrific complexity here, herbs and spice too. Abundant dark cherry fruits, blueberries too; the acidity is terrific here and there s a lovely freshness to the tannins, with chocolate to close.

Perbacco is declassified barrels of Barolo from one of Piedmont's great estates. Treated the same as the real thing, just released a year earlier. A tremendous and classic vintage of focused perfume and gravelly tannin presence with signature anise, tar and blueberries.

The oak sits up and there's some impressive ripeness here. It shows a charming cherry and plum fruit element, with classic hard, sweet aniseed and gentle smoky, earthy complexity - still very unevolved. The palate's nicely phrased: after a bright, fleshy start, tannins kick out the finish with dark-cherry and plum flavours; tine tannin to close.
