Medium red-purple; for once the oak is not dominant on a bouquet which is nonetheless quite complex, with gentle savoury and dark chocolate overtones to the fruit. The palate opens up with attractive red fruit flavours before fairly solid tannins Ñ part, from the fruit and partly from oak Ñ appear on a slightly grippy finish. Medium red-purple; sweet berry fruit aromas are supported by pronounced oak on the bouquet; the palate, too, shows a lot of oak influence which is not yet fully integrated, and which tends to overshadow the unquestionably sweet plum and cassis fruit. A splashy show style which could well mature into something quite special.

This multiple gold medal-winner is typically dark and mouthfilling, with impressive depth of blackcurrant, capsicum and plum flavours, and the tightness of structure to mature well over the long haul. The grapes are grown at the company's shingly Ngakirikiri site, near Gimblett Road, and in other Hawke's Bay vineyards. The wine is typically based on several varieties; the 1997 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (49 per cent), Merlot (31 per cent), Malbec (13 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (7 per cent). Only French oak has been used since 1996, and each year about 40 per cent of the casks are new. Dark and still purple-flushed, with a spicy, slightly minty bouquet, the 1997 vintage is a vibrantly fruity wine with blackcurrant, red berry and nutty oak flavours. It's a complex style with very good depth and firm tannins, but also shows a slight lack of warmth, compared to the 1995.
